Maturing in 90 days, 'Clare Valley Red' showcases rugose, regular-leaf plants, compact and sturdy, reaching about three feet in height. They yield abundant, uniform globe-shaped tomatoes, weighing between three to six ounces, boasting a classic red tomato flavor with a mild, subtly tart undertone. Ideal for fresh consumption or canning, although our experience on the Oregon farm suggests a majority of the fruits ripen in approximately 90 days.
In 2005, Patrina Nuske Small initiated a cross between 'Budai Torpe' and 'Black from Tula', birthing the "Grumpy family." From this lineage, 'Clare Valley Red' was meticulously selected and stabilized by Patrina, named after a renowned wine-producing region in South Australia's mid-north. Collaborating in its development were Craig LeHoullier and Ted Maiden, with Bill Minkey overseeing the final selection's growth.
Originally introduced in Australia, 'Clare Valley Red' made its commercial debut in North America through the Victory Seed Company for the 2019 gardening season. Each packet comprises a minimum of 20 seeds.
