Maturing in just 80 days, 'Iditarod Red' presents compact plants characterized by a sturdy central stem and dark green, rugose, regular leaves. The fruits are smooth, round, occasionally slightly flattened-globe shaped, ranging from two to four ounces, and transition from green to red upon ripening, offering a well-balanced and pleasant flavor.

Developed over the period of 2006 to 2011 by members of the "Dwarf Tomato Project," 'Iditarod Red' emerged as a selection from the "Grumpy family," resulting from a cross between 'Budai Torpe' and 'Black from Tula,' initiated by Patrina Nuske Small of Australia in 2006. The variety was discovered and named by Sue Bailey of Alaska, who received a selection grown by Richard Allen of Australia. The name 'Iditarod Red' pays homage to the world-class dogsled race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. It was introduced in 2011, with each packet containing approximately 20 seeds.
